2025 report cardSun Country Airlines

About Sun Country Airlines
Sun Country is based in Minneapolis-St. Paul and mixes scheduled passenger service with charter and cargo flying. Since 2020 about two-fifths of its flying hours weren't scheduled passenger flights, and BTS can file the fuel for some of that flying as scheduled service. We take it out using the aircraft-hours data BTS publishes, so its figure here reflects scheduled passenger flying only.

The story in the figures
Sun Country Airlines' passenger-miles per gallon rose 94% between 2000 and 2025, from 40.0 to 77.6. Most of that came from the aircraft: seat-miles per gallon rose 64%, while planes ran fuller, with 71% of seat-miles filled in 2000 against 84% in 2025.
Its best year was 2023, at 81.4 passenger-miles per gallon, and its latest figure sits 4.7% below that.
In 2020 the pandemic emptied the cabins: load factor dropped from 81% to 65%, and passenger-miles per gallon fell from 75.3 to 63.6. A flight burns most of its fuel whether the seats are full or not, which is why an empty year looks so bad per passenger. By 2025 the figure was 3.0% above its 2019 level.
Against the all-airline figure for 2025 (60.6), Sun Country Airlines was 28% better. On a 1,000 mile trip that works out to 126 kg of CO2 for one passenger, from burning jet fuel only.

The Sun Country Airlines fleet
Sun Country Airlines operated 47 passenger aircraft of its own in 2025. The average age was 16.0 years: 0% of the aircraft were under five years old and 30% were twenty or older. The oldest was a Boeing 737-800 built in 2001. That's the 11th youngest of the 12 airlines ranked here.
In 2006 the average age was 5.0 years across 13 aircraft. It's older now by 11.0 years, and the fleet is bigger.
On the Boeing 737-800, Sun Country Airlines fits 183 seats on average, against a median of 172 at the other airlines that fly it (154 to 189). Seats on the same aircraft are one reason fuel per seat and fuel per passenger differ between airlines: the fuel burned by a given plane is much the same, and more seats share it.
