2025 fuel burn

Airbus A321neo

The A321neo is the stretched A320 with new engines. American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue and Hawaiian all fly it, and its fleet has been growing quickly.

What the figures say

Airbus A321neo ranks 1 of 25 types for seat-miles per gallon in 2025, at 105.0. The Boeing 737-800, the most common type in the table, flew 79.1, so a gallon on the Airbus A321neo carried a seat 33% further. Over 1,000 miles, one seat on this type accounts for about 93 kg of CO2 from the fuel burned.

The older Airbus A321 flew 77.9 seat-miles per gallon in 2025. The Airbus A321neo is 35% ahead, with 200 seats per flight against 185 (more seats account for part of the gap). Its fuel burn per airborne hour is 889 gallons against 1,076.

US airlines burned 1,040 million gallons on the Airbus A321neo in 2025, 5.6% of the fuel burned on all scheduled passenger flying, over 1,169 thousand airborne hours and 356 thousand departures. The average flight spent 3.3 hours in the air and burned 2,919 gallons.

Since 2021, when it was first flown in volume, the type's figure has fallen from 111.2 to 105.0 seat-miles per gallon (5.5%). The average flight got shorter, from 3.9 to 3.3 hours in the air, which tends to raise fuel burn per seat-mile, because take-off and climb take a larger share of the fuel on a short flight. Fuel per airborne hour rose 7.1%, from 830 to 889 gallons.

Airlines get different results from the same aircraft. Frontier Airlines flew 119.7 seat-miles per gallon on it and American Airlines 98.7, a gap of 21%. The seat count explains most of it: Frontier Airlines put 240 seats on each flight against 195 at American Airlines. Flight length differs too, at 2.3 hours in the air per flight for Frontier Airlines and 3.5 for American Airlines. Longer flights normally burn less fuel per seat-mile, so the longer flights at American Airlines should have helped it, not hurt it. What's left comes from taxi and holding time, weight, engines, how each airline operates and how it allocates fuel to types when it reports, and the filings can't separate those.

Similar-sized aircraft

These types carry within about 25 seats of the Airbus A321neo, so they compete for the same routes.

How to read this. Fuel is what airlines issued to the type in 2025, as filed with the US Bureau of Transportation Statistics, counted only for the hours spent on scheduled passenger flights and divided by the hours in the air. It includes fuel burned taxiing and holding, so it's higher than the cruise figure in a manual. CO2 is 9.75 kg per gallon of jet fuel.
