About Midwest Airline

Midwest Airlines was the Milwaukee airline. Republic Airways bought it in 2009 and later ended the Midwest name, which is why its record stops in 2009.

  • 47.0passenger-miles per gallon, 2009
  • 0.207 kgCO2 per passenger-mile
  • 82%of seats filled
  • 99seats per flight on average

The story in the figures

Midwest Airline's passenger-miles per gallon rose 102% between 2000 and 2009, from 23.3 to 47.0. Most of that came from the aircraft: seat-miles per gallon rose 53%, while planes ran fuller, with 62% of seat-miles filled in 2000 against 82% in 2009.

The shape of the flying changed as well: the average flight went from 84 seats to 99, and the average passenger flew 866 miles per segment in 2000 and 1,056 in 2009. In general, larger aircraft spread fuel over more passengers, and longer flights spend a smaller share of their fuel on takeoff and climb.

2009 is its best year on record, with no earlier year reaching 47.0 passenger-miles per gallon.

Against the all-airline figure for 2009 (49.5), Midwest Airline was 4.9% worse. On a 1,000 mile trip that works out to 207 kg of CO2 for one passenger, from burning jet fuel only.
