About Aloha Airlines

Aloha was one of Hawaii's two big airlines, flying Boeing 737s between the islands and to the mainland. It stopped carrying passengers on 31 March 2008, which ends its record here.

  • 41.5passenger-miles per gallon, 2007
  • 0.235 kgCO2 per passenger-mile
  • 78%of seats filled
  • 126seats per flight on average

The story in the figures

Aloha Airlines' passenger-miles per gallon rose 103% between 2000 and 2007, from 20.5 to 41.5. Most of that came from the aircraft: seat-miles per gallon rose 77%, while planes ran fuller, with 68% of seat-miles filled in 2000 against 78% in 2007.

The shape of the flying changed as well: the average passenger flew 177 miles per segment in 2000 and 478 in 2007. In general, longer flights spend a smaller share of their fuel on takeoff and climb.

Its best year was 2004, at 42.2 passenger-miles per gallon, and its latest figure sits 1.8% below that.

Against the all-airline figure for 2007 (48.4), Aloha Airlines was 14% worse. On a 1,000 mile trip that works out to 235 kg of CO2 for one passenger, from burning jet fuel only.
