In 2007, its last year in the data, ATA Airlines flew 43.4 passenger-miles per gallon of jet fuel. That's 10% worse than the all-airline figure that year. Since 2000 its figure has risen 42%.
About ATA Airlines
ATA was an Indianapolis airline that mixed scheduled flights with military charters. It filed for bankruptcy in 2004 and again in April 2008, when it stopped flying. Its 2008 figures are left out of this site because the airline collapsed mid-year and its fuel and traffic no longer described the same flying.

The story in the figures
ATA Airlines' passenger-miles per gallon rose 42% between 2000 and 2007, from 30.5 to 43.4. Most of that came from the aircraft: seat-miles per gallon rose 29%, while planes ran fuller, with 76% of seat-miles filled in 2000 against 85% in 2007.
The shape of the flying changed as well: the average passenger flew 1,205 miles per segment in 2000 and 1,662 in 2007. In general, longer flights spend a smaller share of their fuel on takeoff and climb.
Its best year was 2004, at 47.2 passenger-miles per gallon, and its latest figure sits 8.0% below that.
Against the all-airline figure for 2007 (48.4), ATA Airlines was 10% worse. On a 1,000 mile trip that works out to 225 kg of CO2 for one passenger, from burning jet fuel only.
