What explains the differences

It's number 68 of the 100 busiest city pairs by passengers, and number 7 for the lowest CO2 per mile flown (0.13 kg per passenger-mile, number 1 being the lowest). A typical route of 2,239 miles in this set comes out at about 304 kg, so this one is 6.4% below it.

The flights use more than one pair of airports: JFK to LAS (58%), EWR to LAS (42%), SWF to LAS (0%). The figures here cover all of them.

The airlines on this route differ by 56% per passenger. Frontier Airlines burned 4,081 gallons per flight and 197 passengers on each, and JetBlue 4,355 gallons and 134 passengers. Fuel burned per flight explains about 15% of the gap and the number of passengers on each flight the other 85%. Frontier Airlines flew 84% full here against 83% for JetBlue, flying mostly Airbus A321neo against Airbus A321.

For comparison, the EPA default factor for a flight of this length (0.129 kg per passenger-mile) would give 289 kg. The EPA figure is a national average for flights of that length. The measured figure for this route is 1.6% lower.

2019 compared with 2025

In 2019 the route carried 1.9 million passengers on 12 thousand flights. In 2025 it carried 2.0 million, up 8%, on 14 thousand flights, up 13%. The average flight had 172 seats then and 180 now, and 90% of them were filled against 82%.

CO2 per passenger was 297 kg in 2019 and 284 kg in 2025, down 4.2%. Fuel burned per flight was down 8.4% (4,709 gallons to 4,316) and passengers per flight were down 4.3% (155 to 148). The distance flown was about the same (2,239 miles then, 2,239 now).

United Airlines led in both years, with 37% of passengers in 2019 and 34% in 2025. Frontier Airlines didn't have 1% of the passengers in 2019 and now carries 7%.

Airline by airline, Delta Air Lines went from 305 kg to 274 kg per passenger (178 seats per flight to 195, main aircraft Boeing 737-900ER then and Airbus A321neo now); Spirit Airlines went from 220 kg to 236 kg per passenger (182 seats per flight to 186, main aircraft Airbus A320-200 then and Airbus A320neo now).
